Sarah Brown's message to delegates:

Sarah Brown, President of PiggyBankKids, mother of John and Fraser and wife to Chancellor Gordon Brown had this message for mother@work Awards delegates today:

"I am delighted to attend the 2006 mother@work Awards to celebrate some of Britain’s true heroines. Nothing is more important than raising our children well, and all the women nominated in this year’s awards demonstrate real commitment, dedication and love for their own families.

"I know that many of the new measures introduced by the Government over the last nine years have provided positive support – from maternity (and paternity) leave, greater access to childcare, the introduction of the New Deal and a fairer tax credits system, as well as measures for small and growing businesses. We see this in the number of mothers able to go back to work, and the many women who have set up their own businesses.

"Employers too can make a big difference – and many do – in understanding the needs of working mothers to do ‘both their jobs’ well. I hear stories all the time from business organisations – from the CBI to Business in the Community – who support changes in business to create more flexible employment practices for women that better enable a balance with family commitments. Everyone wins when this happens, and the mother@work awards highlight some very positive examples with their special awards for employers.

"mother@work provides great encouragement, information and advice through its website for working mothers. It has a loyal following amongst its regular users who clearly find it both a practical tool and a means of building confidence when a busy life becomes a bit overwhelming.

"All the nominees for the Most Exceptional Working Mother Award must be applauded for their great spirit and hard work. Even with all the support from government, employers, family and friends, it is still an amazingly complicated job to raise a child – as I am learning myself! The individual stories of the nominees show fortitude, patience and dogged determination – real heroines who truly deserve this recognition today."
