Part Time Work problems

Hi Diana, I have 2 children at nursery level and I work on a part-time basis. My employers now want to get rid of my role and replace it with a full time role. I have been informed the role will only be on a full time basis and if this is not convienent for me I can have a redundency settlement. Can they do this as I can only do partime. Thanks, Joanna.

Dear Joanna I can understand why you are not sure what your rights are as a part-time worker. You might get some clearer guidelines from www.workingfamilies.org.uk who have some factsheets on the legal position of part-time workers; they also run a free legal helpline on 0800 013 0313. However, it might be worth investigating what the redundancy package is so that you have an idea what they are offering you - it may be a better deal than you think. There are plenty of part-time jobs around and you may feel that you now want to move on if your relationship with your employers is not the same as it was. Perhaps this is the time to start polishing your CV and looking around while you are still in work to see what else is available. As you do not say what kind of work you do, or where you are located, it is difficult to make suggestions but you will at least know what your legal rights are if you take some advice. I hope that things work out well for you and your children.
