Fathers Say

Information for Dads on Post Natal Depression

A Highland based charity HAPIS that supports women and families affected by Ante/Postnatal Depression/Illness is launching its new FATHERS MATTER leaflet for Fathers Day aimed specifically at the partners of women who are, or may be suffering from some sort of ante/postnatal depression.

Run entirely by volunteers and relying on fundraising and goodwill to operate, this new approach by HAPIS to raising awareness of ante/postnatal depression among fathers is seen as essential by those families who have already experienced the problems and tensions that this illness can cause.

At the moment, much of the information and advice on postnatal depression is targeted at mothers themselves, who may not be in a position to recognise that they are suffering from some sort of depression and even if they do, many feel too ashamed to admit how they are feeling or seek help.

By raising awareness amongst fathers or other family members it is hoped that many cases of ante/postnatal depression can be diagnosed early on and effective treatment (whether in the form of talking therapies or anti-depressants, for example) can therefore be sought early, bringing about a speedier recovery.

The leaflet contains information and guidance to fathers on identifying the signs of ante/postnatal depression; explores how fathers themselves might be feeling following the birth of a child and what practical and emotional support they can offer their partners.
