NEWS - 21 Nov 06 - "Super nannies" are to be brought in to try to improve parenting in 77 areas of England with high levels of anti-social behaviour, Tony Blair has said. The prime minister is to give more details of the £4m scheme later.

The Home Office is also to provide more money for existing parenting courses. Parents can volunteer for the courses, with others forced to participate when their children break the law or refuse to attend school. Mr Blair rejected accusations a "nanny state" was interfering with families.

"The 'nanny state' argument applied to this is just rubbish," he told the Sun newspaper.

"No-one's talking about interfering with normal family life. But life isn't normal when you've got 12-year-olds out every night, drinking and creating a nuisance on the street, with their parents not knowing or even caring."

He added: "In these circumstances, a bit of nannying, with sticks and carrots, is what the local community needs, let alone the child."

NEWS - 17 Nov 06 - Welsh Assembly launches plans for working parents.

Plaid Cymru and the Tories went head-to-head today over childcare policies for working parents. Plaid said that if it wins next year’s Assembly election it would double spending so that every family could afford decent childcare.

Meanwhile, the Tories promised to help companies with their business rates if they offered creches and time off to staff with children. Both parties said they would be able to fund their policies from predicted growth in the Assembly’s budget.

Plaid leader Ieuan Wyn Jones said that Wales needs 25,000 childcare places. “In the four years of the next Assembly term we will double the current Government spend of £56 million per annum. We want to make improvements to the childcare situation as soon as possible, making it affordable and accessible to all who need it.

“Doubling the investment will be a significant step in achieving our goal.”

NEWS - 15 Nov 06 - Burger King backs out of kids ads - Burger King is to stop advertising during children's TV programmes from December 22, pre-empting Ofcom's decision next week on whether it should introduce a ban on fast food ads before 9pm.

The fast food industry has been under mounting pressure from lobbyists, the government and health organisations about targeting children in ad campaigns, prompting some chains to adopt new marketing tactics.

Last week, health charity Sustain complained to the Advertising Standards Authority about Burger King's Double Whopper ad, which asked viewers if they were "man enough" to eat it, and questioning the masculinity of men who do not eat junk food.

Burger King's self-imposed children's TV ad ban has been met with scepticism from some health organisations. Paul Lincoln, chief executive of the National Heart Forum, said: "The real issue is will they stop advertising such foods before the 9pm watershed, not just around children's programmes."

NEWS - 1 Nov 06 - After-school clubs aren't new; but some are using them to help parents back into work or training

The Sure Start grant has enabled Bexley to "buy in" the services of childcare providers to deliver extended school services in the community. Barnes Cray is one of five schools in the north of Bexley, an area of disadvantage, which offers the childcare subsidy. Since the scheme began, eight women from the borough have been supported into education and three into employment.

The after-school club at Barnes Cray has been running since 2004, but until the subsidised childcare places were introduced in April this year, uptake was low. In response, Bexley Family Services conducted a survey across the borough that pinpointed areas of need and showed that while parents clearly wanted out-of-school-hours childcare, many felt the existing provision was unaffordable.

Free one day workshop for mums who want to start their own business - Mumpreneurs™ Workshop, Blackburne House, Liverpool, 15th November 2006, 9.30am to 2.30pm

I would like to inform you about a free event run by Business Link that I’m sure will be of interest to netmums in Liverpool. It’s called Mumpreneurs and it’s for any mum or mum to be who has an inkling of a business idea, or who would like to go self-employed but perhaps hasn’t quite taken that leap.

The workshop will be held on Wednesday 15th November at Blackburne House in Liverpool: It’s free, there is a free crèche and lunch is included. And even better, it fits in with school hours – starts at 9.30am and finishes at 2.30pm. Coaching Mums (my company) is running the event in conjunction with Business Link, who is funding the free event as part of Enterprise Week.

Mumpreneurs™ is NOT about telling women how to start a business or drawing up a business plan. What it does do is give mums confidence, inspiration and practical pointers and actions to setting up their own business. It is for any mums, whether they have a business idea or not, whether they are ready to start up a business or they are just pondering it as an option.

As a “mumpreneur” myself, I was prompted to start Mumpreneurs™ after seeing how my clients often lack confidence – or the courage of their own convictions. And I know from personal experience how hard it is to take that leap into self-employment when you have childcare to consider. I have been running the Mumpreneurs™ workshops for the past two years with Business Links around the country, and to date, over 200 mums have attended – and all of them have gained something from the event.

The event is open to all women throughout Greater Merseyside. In order to book a place, mums should email Louise Smith at Business Link Merseyside – louise.smith@gme.or.uk or call Louise on 0151 649 4570.
