Elderly parents alone will receive around £21 billion of unpaid care and help from their adult children this year. The increasing dissatisfaction over the conflicting demands faced by the "sandwich generation" means the issue of caring is rising fast up the political agenda. The Cost of a Parent report by LV=, formerly Liverpool Victoria, the financial services company, paints a stark picture of life for many. More: www.telegraph.co.uk NEWS - 5 Sept 07 - The Times 'Women climb career ladder faster – but are paid less for doing same job' Women are beating men up the career ladder but are still being paid less and getting smaller bonuses for doing similar work. A study of 42,000 managers found that at the age of 37, the average female manager was five years younger than her male equivalent. But despite women’s career success, they are still being paid an average 12 per cent less for working in a similar role — and at director level the gap rises to 23 per cent. The National Management Salary Survey also reveals that resignation rates among women directors, managers and professionals are at their highest level for five years. Women are 20 per cent more likely than men to resign from their jobs. And once again there are hands raised in shock and horror that the number of non-working single parent households is on the rise. Despite fiddling about with the benefits system and offering alleged incentives, there is an outpouring of middle class angst from MPs and think tanks, disappointed that those pesky single parents won't get off to work and set a good example for their children.
