About Us

Denise has worked for many years as a magazine and national newspaper features writer and also works in the public relations field, setting up her own company in 1999.

She became a working mum herself in 2001 and finding information about returning to work, and all the related issues that it brings, proved to be a very ad hoc business.

Much of the reassurance needed at this time came from shared experiences with other working mothers and all agreed that a central point of reference for all this would be much appreciated. Hence, Mother@Work.

The editorial team is Denise and Vicky Shepherd, Consumer Editor and mother to Ella, and Diana Wolfin, a personal trainer for careers and mother of four, well versed in juggling the life-work balance. Alongside this are Marlene Shalton our financial expert, Mary Webber, our legal expert from AdviceNow, Jackie Violet, our motoring correspondent and and Lorraine Thomas, our parent coach expert.

Denise says:

"It can be difficult to find time to coordinate all the practicalities of being a working mother and it is difficult to keep all the plates spinning all the time. Mother@Work exists to try and help you be as informed as possible about the various aspects of being a mother and working - from the practical aspects of using your income wisely and knowing your employment rights to making sure you have time for yourself, your health and your relationships with the people around you.

"I found that while there are plenty of magazines that deal with leisure time and how to look gorgeous and achieve the perfect pasta bake, none comprehensively attacked juggling a job, a social life, your kids lives, keeping everyone happy and then maybe, just maybe, finding ten minutes for yourself somewhere. But more importantly, how to save time and what to do when it feels like time runs out.

"The transition to working mother was hard, believing if I was organised enough, not much would have to change. It took my brother to point out that I was the one putting the stress on myself and that I was the only one who could make a difference.

"I hope that in providing this website we can help make things a bit smoother. We have come across many stories of employers not willing to make exceptions, people finding no time to sort out financial situations (or knowing where to start), women wanting to take action and rearrange their lives but being too busy to do it - to name just a few. There's a lot of us out there!

"This webzine is the result of just some of that research. I hope that as Mother@Work grows, you will grow with us and enjoy using it as much as we have building it!"
